One parrot or two - advice greatly appreciated!

Post by shenders » Sat May 09, 2009 4:18 pm

I currently have a 4 year old blur-fronted Amazon parrot, sex unknown (referred to as male). He is very bonded to me - he hates everyone else - but with me he's as gentle as could be. I am male! I have been thinking recently of getting another parrot, however given his behavioural characteristics I am not sure whether or not this would be wise, and I would value you opinion on this matter. The last thing I would want to do would be to cause him unnecessary stress, as well as risk injury to the other bird. If you did feel that it should be ok, am I restricted to only getting another Amazon, or could I consider a different breed (e.g. cockatoo, African grey, macaw)? Does the sex of my bird influence the sex of bird that I would need to get? I would not be intending to breed. Could the bond between the new bird and my current parrot damage my relationship with my parrot? Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you!
