Rehomed birds.

Postby Bouvier » Tue Jul 08, 2008 10:25 pm

I was asked by a friend, who was reading my PS mag, what the difference was between a re-homed parrot and one for sale. He showed me the adverts in the mag for re-homing and each had a price attached. I checked previous mags and found the same thing. Surely every parrot for sale is (hopefully) being rehomed therefore it should come under one heading. Being seperated it suggests that a re-homed bird is just that, not one for sale.
Also, while on the subject of adverts, can I suggest that all sale adds are charged and all wanted adds are free, exchanges can be classed as sales etc.
I am aware of what the initial idea was behind the free adds etc but there are now over 6000 members and the price of birds has risen dramatically therefore a mere £1 per line is not excessive. Also can the general area of sale be added to all adverts (eg Yorkshire/Wales/Scotland) as this would prevent a great deal of frustration on behalf of both the seller and possible buyer. I must admit in the past I have rung someone only to find they were indeed from Scotland (a little too far to travel for me in the south of england especially at the rising cost of petrol/transport) resulting in the advertiser no doubt calling me a time waster etc.

This is the bone of contention! Originally the re-homing section was open to anyone, not only P.S. members to help solve the often asked question about a parrot that has been left after the owner died, or one where people have moved and no pets allowed etc. or a parrot that the owners have got fed-up with.

They were placed with a small donation and it was left to the owner and new owner to come to some arrangement. Then of course some parrots were part of a deceased will and there fore monies were expected to go to the estate and prices began to creep in. I personally am sure that a lot of parrots offered in the re-homing section are another form of selling unwanted birds. It comes up at council meetings about three times a year.

The free adverts originate from when the P.S. was founded on the hope that members would pay less for stock against what was advertised in the bird magazines as we did not charge for adverts so they should have been cheaper but now people abuse it.

This has been forwarded to me by our office to help explain further and your comments have been noted.

Cliff,

The Rehoming section is for Non-members to sell a one-off bird, we charge £10 for this service. With regard to the cost of Donated adverts we request a donation of at least £1 per line but many of our members do pay more than that. We do try to ensure that an Area of the country follows adverts but sometimes (when adds come in late) we do not record this information. I hope this helps.
