Re: Cuttlefish bones?

I have used Cuttlefish picked up from the beach with no problems. You must make sure that there is no contamination on them ie oil etc then soak them in clean water for about an hour which allows the fresh water to go into the cuttlefish. Then wash them in warm water several times using clean water ...

Re: Can You Help a Client of Mine Please?

Hi, I believe the Heathrow Animal Reception Centre would be your best option in this matter. It is part of the Defra (well runs along side it) and will be able to give you the fullest possible advice in this matter also they do hold animals/birds during transit. I think the length of time the bird i...

Re: looking to buy a baby African grey parrot

Hi again Donna, On the feed side you seem to have a very good variety but may I suggest that you do not have different feeding pots. Parrots and in particular Greys are well known for being Sunflower/Seed junkies and the likelyhood is that yours will fill up on the junk food (ie seed) before trying ...

Re: looking to buy a baby African grey parrot

Hi Donna, I agree with what Kev is telling you. Colour coded rings only apply to aluminium ones and you need to know the code colour for each year, steel ring are plain (silver) as are split rings. I have a friend who never rings her birds as she believes they will get caught on cages etc. but she d...

Re: Nuts but not whole hazel nuts

Hi Martin, I have B&G & GW macaws and feed Two Walnuts each, in the morning and the same in the afternoon/evening. I also feed hazel nuts at the same time. I do not give more as I find that they will fill up on them and leave any other food alone also they tend to crack excess nuts and just drop the...

Re: Nuts but not whole hazel nuts

If your birds are in an aviary and exercise a lot then there is no problem with feeding your birds Walnuts. I would suggest only one between two birds and only on alternate days. If they are indoor (pet type) birds then an occasional Walnut is not a problem. I would suggest that you do not give them...

Re: Cockatiel Breathing Issue. Advice/Vet? URGENT Please Hel

Hello Gary, I am so very sorry about the loss of Mackie. Like others I too have been through the same trauma with my Birds/Dogs. You will eventually get over your grief. I have lost pet birds due to illness or age and took the decision not to have a pet bird but only for breeding (my hobby which has...

Re: African Grey

Hi Jgrey, When you say you grey is sick - what exactly do you mean? Generally Parrots are not 'sick', in the human sence, but do regurgitate their food - is this what is happening? If it is it is a normal thing for it to do as it is a mature bird. If you mean that it is reacting in a certain way ie ...

Hello Flyer,
If you are a member of the Parrot Society then you will recieve a monthly magazine in the rear of which are several pages of adverts from private owners/breeders. You will also have access to the Parrots for sale area. The Forum was not set up for adverts or requests for birds.

Re: Cockatiel Breathing Issue. Advice/Vet? URGENT Please Hel

Hi Gary, Sorry to hear of the problems you have with your Cockatiel. He is the equivalent of 60-70yrs in human terms so you would expect him to slow down and sleep longer, however having said that then a check by a vet would be advisable. If you go to the front page of the PS site you will see to th...

Re: Fireworks!

Did he react only on the one evening or every evening? In general it is hard to tell what causes a bird to pluck out or damage thier feathers, I would just watch him for a while but not worry about the feather pulling etc. If you do each time he preens you will react and he will pick up on this and ...

Re: Aviary Wire!

Believe it or not but Vinegar is an anticeptic as well as a disinfectant/cleaning agent. The ancient Romans used it in surgery and before them the Greeks. Try it on a bee/nettle sting and you will soon realize how good it is. I use it to clean my aviaries and find it excellent. It dissolves the urin...

Re: Bird Security and Wing Stamping

I would agree with Wendi Beamson that Smartwater is an excellent form of security but I feel that she has missed the point of Wing Stamping. The article she has used was in reply to the report of Theft of birds. In my original article that was printed in the magazine in 1995 it gave a full insight i...

Re: Small AVIARY LIGHTING

HI Peter,
You would be better off using energy saving bulbs that come on slightly dim but then get brighter. I use a series of these in my flights (shed length 45ft) and they do not give an instant 'bright light' and therefore do not scare the birds, but then go on to give plenty of light.
